Sunday morning we kicked off the day with breakfast at the wonderful L'Enfant Cafe two blocks from our hotel.
So we loaded up on coffee and hit the road to find the nearest metro station that would take us to the National Mall.
Along the way we passed a Sunday farmers market, with prices so high it made me realized the ones back home are a steal.
We finally found a metro entrance and descended into The Pit of Despair.
The National Mall is the stretch that runs between the US Senate building and the Lincoln Memorial, containing most of the Smithsonian and the Washington Monument.
We decided our first stop was going to be the Air and Space Museum.
(Below is the actual "plane" created and flown by the Wright Brothers)
The next museum on our list was the National History Museum. We were a bit bummed that the famous TRex display had been replaced with an elephant, but we had a great time seeing everything else.
At one point I looked up and saw quite a disturbing display...
We also found a crime lab with actual human remains that could be examined.
The bones were clue to an unsolved mystery game, and for those who didn't mind fondling someone's dead, decaying bones (not me) it was a great setup!
The last room we visited was the precious gems display, most of which were donated by Harry Winston.
The crowd is surrounding the Hope diamond - the largest blue diamond in the world
If anyone needs some birthday/Christmas gift ideas for me, I'd be happy with any of the following...
Last on our tour was the American History Museum, beginning with the First Ladies' Inaugural Ball gowns, dating back 150 years.
And of course found our way to the Julia Childs' exhibit
"I saw it in the window and I just had to have it"
(It was such a beautiful day!)
Busboys and Poets had great food and a fun atmosphere. And they pretty much let us pitch a tent and camp out for a couple hours.
We even whipped out the Yahtzee
And invited our new friend LaVenia to join us,
until she kicked our rear-ends with THREE yahtzees.
We're not friends anymore.
Then it was back to the hotel.
